php coder speechless
Submitted by dave_mwi on Monday, 5 July, 2004 - 17:36
Ok, where do I begin?

Every so often I go on my usual text editor hunt. I've used Textpad over the past 3 years or so vasilating from it to other editors. The list of which includes TextPad, Zend, UltraEdit, VIM and a slew of others. I have only a few requirments that I've been seeking but have been unable to find: sftp or ftp over ssh, cvs integration, syntax highligting (php) which is configurable with font sizes etc...I never really though that these were outlandish requests at all - but I usuaully could not find them all in on editor that was tolerable or affordable based on my meager income Eye-wink

Enter jEdit. Man - cool. I skipped over it once when someone mentioned it because at first glance it seemed like a java only editor. I haven't done any java for a long time and don't do any right now. However, someone mentioned it again and then what caught my eye was 80 different kinds of syntax highlighting. Hmmmmm...interesting. Holy cow, this program is cool. And it doesn't even feel like java on my windows box. How did you do it?

So I installed the program and started looking for my simple set of requirements...good syntax...quick...where's the ftp/sftp, cvs? Oh, in the plugins section....ok, where do I download, how do I install...class path this, class path that...Nope. "Click here to install". Thats it?! I am in heaven.

The Plusses for me:
- The plugins. So Easy.
- Fast. Very Fast.
- This is kinda plugin related, but the integration of sftp and ftp into the file space...outstanding.
- The cvs integration is easy.
- Sytnax checking for PHP - an unexpected plus.
- Many more plugins I've yet to discover.

The Minuses - LOL:
- well, I'm looking still
- No class/method browser for PHP? Or have I just not found it yet.

My compliments on an outstanding application. It's got everything I need and I don't see a reason right now not to use it over anything else I've tried. Again -great app.

Website Button Submission
Submitted by joeguy on Monday, 19 April, 2004 - 04:18
Hello. My name is Scott Vinkle and I would like to submit a website button. I actually only started using jEdit a few weeks ago, but since then I've realized that I've missed out on a whole lot while using other editors. I think jEdit is amazing because it can be used on any platform, it's open source, and it's so customizable. Smiling
Anywho, my button is 88x31 in size, PNG format, and I created it with The Gimp 2.0. I think it looks neat because I used a Star Wars font and it looks like the text "jedi" from Return of the Jedi, but with a T on the end. Sticking out tongue
Here is the URL to my button: http://tuxinator.homelinux.com/images/jedit_button.png.
Thank you for considering my website button for submission to the wonderful jEdit community! Laughing out loud
File uploading problem
Submitted by cvicari on Thursday, 18 March, 2004 - 11:54
Hi, I uploaded a new macro I called Toggle Split, but that's not visible in the community downloads, while it's visible using the macro manager plugin. I also tried to update this file, but I could only add another macro with the same name. What should I do to correct these things? Have I missed something stupid?

Templates plugin howto
Submitted by SimonWaltr on Tuesday, 24 February, 2004 - 22:38
I came to jEdit after finding very few code editors out there written for Mac that are worth their salt. I must say, to this you have the best application available for Mac that I am aware of (non-commercial at the very least).

I am curious about the templates pluggin however. Are there any good howto's to develop new templates?

Also is there a good autocomplete method I should be looking into? Templates vs. macros, et cetera. I am specifically looking for PHP...

As a side note, it would be really handy to have some doc for the templates pluggin... I don't find it intuitive to use (especially since I have yet to figure it out).

Thanks a ton,
-Greg
(New) not working
Submitted by aabbaabb on Tuesday, 24 February, 2004 - 06:55
I suppose the (New) text is not working in this forum.

Sometimes a forum (e.g. Using jEdit) says there is new messages, but when you open a forum there is no (New) text behind any messages (but there is a new messages!).

Also sometimes when there is e.g. new messages in Troubleshooting, also "root level" Developer Discussion shows that there is new messages (but Troubleshooting is not under Developer Discussion).

If you think this should be working, then the problem might be that I am using forums behind the HTTP proxy and maybe someone else behind the same proxy has messed up my (New) messages (even he/she doesn't use my login name!)
Login form to the top

I really would like to have login form on the top right hand corner. Now it is far below and I don't ever remember to login.
theme badly broken in IE (right blocks)
Submitted by Anonymous on Friday, 30 January, 2004 - 02:07
i tried to browse this site with Internet Explorer (6, XP) and noticed quite a layout bug: the right blocks get moved down below the last line of the main content (screenshot). this makes the site basically unusable (the login block is 4 or 8 pages down) in the browser used by 90% of the people ...
Difference between CodeAid, DotComplete and SpeedJava
Submitted by Anonymous on Thursday, 29 January, 2004 - 22:57
CodeAid, DotComplete and SpeedJava all seem to be Java auto-complete plugins.

If this is true, what is the difference between them and which is the most "complete".

Thanks, Tom
The new community L&F
Submitted by thebiMbo on Saturday, 3 January, 2004 - 09:01
I cannot discuss on issues about how better is drupal insted of PostNuke, but the new L&F (specially the feel side) of the community site is not good as the old one.
There're a lot of points which people fire up again and again, i know this is a volontary effort and now is holiday time... but there're some plans on making this more attractive and comfortably either for actual users and/or future users... ?

Checkout the new Projects
Submitted by Brad Mace on Monday, 29 December, 2003 - 07:30
I've created some projects for some of my plugins as well as the community site. I think this is a nice way to track issues for plugins, or even edit modes or macros, that aren't big enough to need their own sourceforge project or tracker. This way issues are organized by plugin, not just dumped together and possibly assigned to the last known developer. Let me know what you think.

jEdit 4.2pre3 is now available
Submitted by slava on Monday, 7 July, 2003 - 03:24
jEdit 4.2pre3 is now available. This is mostly a bug fix release (and there are a LOT of bug fixes) but it has a few nice improvements too. Also there will be a plugin batch in a few days, with many new and updated plugins.
HTML feed of jEdit Community articles available
Submitted by jgellene on Thursday, 18 October, 2001 - 20:57
To use the article feed, simply insert the following PHP code on your web page:

<?php
readfile ("http://community.jedit.org/get_articles.php?
req=showarticles&limit=10&flat=1&summaries=1");
?>

Note that the readfile statement should span only a single line.

The first parameter is mandatory, the other are show at their default values. The limit parameter specifies how many articles will be displayed, beginning with the most recent. The flat parameter is a boolean that determines whether the article's author and publication date will be show on the same line as the title. The summaries parameter determines whether the first paragraph of the article will be displayed along with the title, author and publication date.
