No tildes or accent characters

Hi All,

jEdit has worked well so far for me, but there's a problem I've recently noticed. When I try to enter Spanish characters such as ñ, accented characters such as áéíóú, or inverse question/exclamation marks, it replaces them with squares. Changing the font doesn't do anything.

I'm running jEdit 4.1final, j2sdk-1.4.2.04, and XFree86 4. Also, I use xmodmap's 'questiondown' 'exclaimdown' and 'dead_acute' maps, although this is irrelevant, as emacs (and the console 'nano') uses these characters fine.

I don't speak spanish, but I'm learning how to, so it's not a massive concern /just yet/...

jEdit 4.1 also had problems with accents

I use 4.1 Final in Windows 2000 and although the accented characters work, jEdit sometimes tends to ignore the accents. What I mean is that the first time I use the accent followed by the letter, e.g.: ^ a, only the "a" is shown. If I insist, then the complete accented letter appears.

a slight update I forgot to add- I can add these characters from the Character Map plugin, but I still can't input them from my keyboard...

Try using the newest version

Try using the newest version of JEdit (currently 4.2pre11). It may fix the poblem.

Locales, not a jedit or java problem

Actualy, it's kinda of a java problem.

it will get its settings from wherever it want, and being the host linux, it has plenty of places to choose from.

THE SOLUTION: set the default codepage correctly

I have no ideia how java get its input locale (and will not until java is useful in beOS), but here on debian running "dpkg-reconfigure locales" and selection ONLY the encoding you want solves everything.

In my case, i have previously:
C (posix)
en_US-iso8859-1
pt_BR-iso8859-1

I left "C" because i don't like that people touch my outputs... but only when i set one of the iso8859-1 as the default, and removed the C, that java let me input ç, á, ~ and the likes.

now i have only
en_US-iso8859-1 (default)
pt_BR-iso8859-1
