Putting my own icons in the Tool Bar?

Hi, I'm having trouble putting my own icons into the the Tool Bar... I assume that they have to be 22 by 22 pixels large & either png's or giff's but every time I try to load one, jEdit just freezes. Do the images I'm trying to load have to be in a certain folder or sub directory or something? I'm running jEdit on a mac G4 under OS X 10.4.11
Any help would be appreciated.

External icons can be loaded

External icons can be loaded from any ordinary directory. I use some PNG's with different resolutions and color depth:
24x24x8, 22x22x24, 32x32x24, 24x24x24.

How do You "try to load" icons? And what system are You using?

My system:
Windows XP SP3
SUN JRE 1.6.0_13
jEdit 4.3pre16

Because you said it worked for you, I tried it again a few times. The problem was that after I chose my icon from a directory with "load icon from file", the icon appeared on a confirmation window that was completely covered by the previous window. So it appeared that the program had frozen. This could be unique to the jEdit 4.3pre16 mac OS X build I guess...
’course I feel like a right idiot but I hope this helps anyone with the same problem
